College Visits

Juniors and seniors will be excused from school to visit a college providing arrangements are made a minimum of 3 days ahead of time with the counselor.  Juniors and seniors are allowed 2 college visits per year.  Visits are not allowed during the last week of any quarter.  The following are the steps for an approved college visit:

1) Get a blue sheet from the counselor's office, have your teachers sign it and return it to the counselor's office.

2) A call or note from a parent to the counselor's office to verify the visit.

If the following steps are not followed, the absence will be considered unexcused.


Scholarship Information


Horatio Alger Aksarben Scholarship - Must be a resident of Western Iowa attending high school full time. Demonstrate critical financial need ($55,000 or lower adjusted gross family income).  Involved in co-curricular and community service activities.  Display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity.  Minimum GPA of 2.0.  Be a U.S. citizen.  Apply at scholars.horatioalger.org.  Due October 25, 2017. 

Hagan Scholarship - Must be a citizen of the U.S. and be a student in a high school graduating class in an eligible public high school.  Must have a 3.5 cumulative GPA and a composite score of 23 or higher on the ACT.  Must be enrolled in an eligible four year college or university the fall semester following high school graduation.  Must work 240 hours in the twelve months prior to the start of each academic year of college.  Must complete the FAFSA in 2017 with an EFC less than $6,500.  Must apply for eligible federal and state grants.  Go to www.hsfmo.org to get information and apply.  Due November 15, 2017.

HSC Warranty Scholarship -  Must be a U.S. citizen.  Applicants required to submit a video.  Applicants required to "like" the Home Service Club's Facebook page to be considered.  See detailed instructions at https://www.hscwarranty.com/scholarship.  Due December 1, 2017.

TBS Scholarship - Student must be on or have been on an IEP during their secondary education.  Applicant must submit an essay of no more than 500 words or video or audio presentation of less than 5 minutes.  See other guidelines and applications in the guidance office.  Applications and supporting documents must be postmarked before January 16, 2018 or received by 4:00pm on January 16, 2018.

Hixon Opportunity Award - Resident of Iowa.  Students must have faced challenges of personal and/or financial hardship.  Must possess the potential to succeed.  Must demonstrate financial need as determined by filing the FAFSA.  Must be admissible to Iowa State University.  Applications online at www.hixon.dso.iastate.eduDue January 1, 2018.

Grand Lodge of Iowa, A.F. & A.M. Scholarship - for graduating seniors that plan to pursue a post-secondary education in any state at an accredited institution which provides a two or four year college program.  Other criteria may be found on the applications in the guidance office or online at www.grandlodgeofiowa.comPostmarked on or before February 1, 2018.  

Iowa Newspaper Foundation Scholarships - for students preparing for careers in media.  Apply online at www.inanews.comDue February 9, 2018.

HyVee Foundation Scholarship - See guidelines in the application.  Applications in the guidance office or online at www.hy-vee.com under company info.  Postmarked on or before February 10, 2018.

Mediacom Communications World Class Scholarship Program- Offering 55 $1,000 non-renewable scholarships.  Must live in an area that is serviced by Mediacom.  A list of towns is included on the application which may be found at www.mediacomworldclass.com. Must include an essay on leadership, the applicant's school transcript and two filled-out recommendation forms. Completed applications should be sent to:  World Class Scholarship Program, 3737 Westown Parkway, Suite A, West Des Moines, IA 50266. Postmarked on or before February 16, 2018.

Soil and Water Conservation Districts Scholarship - Open to Iowa High School Class of 2018 students pursuing programs of study in any field of conservation or agriculture.  Applications in the guidance office or online at www.cdiowa.org.  Applications must be received by February 16, 2018 at the SWCD office in the county you reside.

Iowa Financial Know-How Challenge: Senior Scholarship- Open to: Iowa high school seniors who will attend college in fall 2018.  Awards: Thirty $2,000 college scholarships plus $500 to each recipient's high school. Requirements: Register online and then follow emailed instructions to complete two online components and a related assessment.  Essays may be required as a tie breaker.  Start at: www.IowaStudentLoan.org/Giveaway Dates: Oct. 23-Feb. 16

MGEC Technical Scholarship - open to high school seniors who plan to enroll in a mechanical or trade course of study at an accredited Iowa Community College.  Additional criteria found on the back page of the applications in the guidance office or online at www.grandlodgeof iowa.com.  Postmarked on or before March 1, 2018.

BVRMC Auxiliary Scholarship - Must be a high school senior that lives within a 35 mile radius of Buena Vista Regional Medical Center.  Applicant must pursue a health related field of educational study.  This application is not need based and will be awarded in the amount of $500 upon completion of the first academic semester.  Applications in the guidance office.  Postmarked on or before March 31, 2018.

College Funding Forecaster Giveaway - Open to: Iowa high school students and their parents or guardians. Awards: Weekly drawings for educational expense awards plus two college scholarships for high school seniors attending college in fall 2018.  Requirements:  Complete the College Funding Forecaster tool to estimate total college costs over four years and enter contact information to register.  Start at: www.IowaStudentLoan.org/Giveaway Dates: March 5-May 11

Pearl Hull Falk Scholarship - Must be of Protestant faith, a resident of Iowa and attending the University of Iowa full-time.  Applications located in the guidance office.  Due May 1, 2018.
