After-School Leadership Program for Middle School Students

Begins January 20

CHEROKEE, Iowa – Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach will kick-off a Middle School Ricochet After-School Program beginning immediately after school until 5:00 p.m. on Jan. 20.

Ricochet: An Extreme Leadership Adventure is a middle school leadership initiative created and sponsored by ISU Extension and Outreach and Iowa 4-H. It is open to all middle schoolers and encourages youth to develop their leadership skills.

“When you ricochet, you’re on the move, full of energy and ready for whatever comes your way,” said Debbie Erpelding, Cherokee County Youth Coordinator with ISU Extension and Outreach, who will lead the program. “These characteristics are also signs of a true leader. Middle schoolers often bounce from one thing to the next, trying on different roles as they find their place in the world. Some may see this as unpredictable, but do you know what is also unpredictable? The opportunity and need for leadership, especially from our kids.”

Erpelding explains that Ricochet prepares youth to become leaders and helps them to accept leadership opportunities that arise through the use of adventure and hands-on experiences.

During the remainder of the school year, the Ricochet program will be held the third Monday of every month at the Cherokee Middle School. All sessions will begin immediately after school and finish by 5:00 p.m.

“Middle school is the perfect time to help our kids develop their leadership potential,” Erpelding said. “Not only will we learn, but we will have fun with our friends while we learn.”

Ricochet is free to participate in thanks to sponsorship from the Cherokee County Extension Council; however, preregistration is needed to plan adequately for space and materials. To preregister, contact Debbie at 712-225-6196 or deberp@iastate.edu.
