WHS Biology Students Conduct Spit Lab

The WHS Biology class conducted a lab today where they investigated the effect of pH and temperature on the enzyme salivary amylase, as part of their unit on Biomolecules. They exposed test tubes of amylase and starch to either an acid, or to heat, in order to observe their effects on the breakdown of starch into simpler carbohydrates. Students were engaged and used problem-solving skills in order to understand what enzymes do, how important homeostasis of temperature and pH are for enzymes to work in our bodies, and how important enzymes are to our lives in general. A bonus was having former student, Clare Prentice (Tuttle) here today to help with this lab! She has been observing and helping Mrs. Anderson this semester as part of her Morningside courses to become a science teacher!
