About Our Program
Speech at CWHS involves Large Group and Individual Activities. Any student can be involved in Speech. Each school year about 100 students are actively involved in Large Group or Individual Speech.
In Large Group, students can be involved in live performances such as Choral Reading, Readers Theater, Group improv, Ensemble Acting, Group Mime, or Solo Mime. Students can also be in recorded events such as Radio Broadcasting, TV News, or Short Film.
In Individual Speech students can be involved in live events such as: Poetry, Prose, Literary Program, Spontaneous Speaking, Solo Improv, Monologue Acting, Expository Address, Original Oratory, After Dinner Speaking, Storytelling, Public Address, Solo Musical Theatre, or Radio News Announcing. A new recorded event this year is videocasting.
Speech is a great activity to participate in to build your public speaking skills and have a lot of fun! CWHS is a member of the Iowa High School Speech Association. Speech is coached by James and Jaylene De Vos and Zoe Meadows.
The CWHS Speech team also has a mission to give back to the Cherokee community. Each year groups or individuals involved in CWHS Speech are invited to perform around the community. Also, the Speech team has hosted the lip sync for over 20 years. This fundraiser is always in support of local projects or food banks in the Cherokee community.
